I'm Julio Freitas, owner of The Flower Hat! We are a floral design studio and flower farm located in Bozeman, MT. In our very short season, we grow thousands and thousands of beautiful flowers that we use in our wedding designs throughout Spring, Summer and Fall.
Over the years, we have received an incredible number of requests for workshops. We sat down and figured out that we do indeed have a very unique business model: we design for weddings and events, we grow a lot of our own flowers (while still ordering in a percentage from wholesalers and local farms around us) and it's our largest line of business. We have a six-figure wedding/event business, and a huge part of that number was the ability to "buy flowers from ourselves". I'm so proud of what this little company has achieved and I'm ready to share it with you!

Before I continue, I think it’s important for you to know why I decided to put these workshops together, besides your requests, and what you can expect from them. B A C K S T O R Y I want to go back to when I started floral design 8 years ago. Before I became a designer, I worked in the hospitality industry. I was a manager for a corporate hotel and had been appointed as the “creative” in the team. Besides Christmas and other visual aspects, I was quickly trusted with seasonal floral arrangements for the hotel’s entry table. Eventually, I translated what I was doing for the hotel to corporate arrangements and started providing weekly floral displays for a coffee shop called “Harper and Madison”. Although I wanted to continue to work with hotel and restaurant accounts, weddings QUICKLY took over our calendar. |

While those calls and inquiries were extremely exciting, they were also terrifying. I was taking on weddings without having any experience in the wedding design world. In the beginning, every wedding was new, and with each job came a lot of anxiety and stress as I dove into the unknown.
When it came to floral design, there wasn’t as much information out as there is now. I came into the scene during a time when “sharing your secrets” was a big mistake and frowned upon, or at least so I was told by designers who had been in the industry for a while. Step by step guides on how to make boutonnieres or how to put a bouquet together, or resources for containers and anything in between were non-existent. If I talked to a designer and expressed I was looking to start my own business, I was immediately shut out. These will be steps that I hope you'll take back with you and apply to your business like I do in mine every single day.

Over the last 11 years, we have executed flowers for hundred of events and we've been featured in some of the largest publications in the country (and world wide too)! All of those features have one thing in common: locally grown flowers! They do make a difference in your work. We've always grown in such a small space, so I purposefully took the time to understand and select exactly what to grow. My goal has always been to maximize my growing space by growing carefully selected blooms that would elevate my arrangements. Those are the hard to ship, hard to find varieties that totally bring your arrangement to life. When you attend the workshop, we will walk through the fields and I'll show you examples of what those crops are, how we grow them and how we use them in our wedding work.

With your help, I created an agenda that incorporates what you asked for that would benefit your business the most. I'm so proud of these classes and I can't wait for you to see everything we have planned for you! With all of that in mind, I have created a series of workshops that is encompassing of the aspects of design and farming that is The Flower Hat. The workshops are for those with a passion for floral design as a business and for those who dream/plan on starting or revamping a career in floral design with locally grown flowers. The Business of Wedding Florals
The first workshop is called Prosper. This workshop is closely related to our original concept, focused on the business of wedding florals. This 3-day workshop will help anyone understand the fundamentals of the wedding floral industry — both growing your business and working with wedding florals.
We are developing an entirely new workbook are restructuring parts of the workshop execution to make this an experience you won't soon forget. Prosper is an in-person experience that equips you with valuable tools and a roadmap for growing your dreamed, relatively new, or established business.
Over the years, I have received the most genuine and kind comments about my floral creations and designs. Finding your creative style begins with time, education, exposure to new ideas, tools, and creativity. I spent years of investment under the instruction of others further along on the journey, and it equipped me with the tools I needed to find my path forward.

Releasing the Creative Florist Within
Developing yourself as a creative requires that you eliminate that overly harsh inner critic that wants to make comparison the goal. Along with it, you must crush the fear of failure in a way that can open you up to great success.
In response to these thoughts, I have developed a brand new 2-day intensive workshop called, Emerge, focused on exploring floral creativity through hands-on sessions, intermediate floral theory, and beginning the work of discovering your own definitive style.
With more immersive experiences with flowers throughout, Emerge offers you the opportunity to focus more singularly on the creative process. In addition, this in-person workshop will provide ties to the big picture of growing your business, but the overarching theme revolves heavily around your growth into a floral creative.
Education is a passion of mine. So whether you're ready to strengthen your business insight and understanding of event florals with our Prosper workshop, or you're ready to work on carving out your personal and professional creative development with Emerge, I believe this coming year will be a quantum leap forward for many of you.
We welcome those who want to learn about floral design and small scale flower farming, including those who:
- Have any level of experience in floral design. Flower Lovers/Hobbyists are also welcomed!
- Are Floral Designers and want to learn how to grow a manageable sized garden to cut flowers for their work
- Are Flower Farmers wanting to break into wedding design as a revenue stream for their business
- Are looking to take their design skills to the next level
- Need a road map for their business, from screening inquiries to delivering the wedding

Due to the limited number of days we have to cover such extensive topics, these workshops are NOT for those looking for information on the following:
- Advanced Floral Design techniques - Our classes are intermediate level, requiring no background experience. But if you have mastered the basics and intermediate levels, you may see these classes as an opportunity to look at floral design from a different perspective.
- Pests and weed management specific to your area - We have dealt with aphids, spider mites, thrips, grasshopers, some slugs, earwigs (my nemesis!!), voles, but that's pretty much about it.
- Implements - We just have a small tiller that we use, but we're hoping to buy a tractor in the near future. Until then, I'm not help with big implements.
- Large scale farming - We just now upgraded to one acre so still very small :)
- Advanced technology - We have some heaters in the greenhouse and a tractor, but that's it! lol
- Soil conditions and/or specific climates information for other areas of the country. - Our soil is loamy/sandy/rocky and that's pretty much all I've had to work with.
- Organic Certification - We're not certified, nor are we looking to be, even though we apply natural practices on the farm
- Hand-on Farming Experience - We only have so much time, therefore we will not be showing or providing hands-on experience with farming duties, including but not limited to season extension, bed prepping, seed starting, flower processing, etc. We will be harvesting some flowers, though.
- Floral design software options for their business - We use Excel and Word for most things projects, Quickbooks for accounting and Square for Credit Card Processing.
- Perfectly structured centerpieces, tall or short, round or tear-drop cascading bouquet - We favor a more loose, natural, flow-driven style.

- Question: I'm currently looking to start growing flowers, but I'm not quite ready to take on weddings. Will you cover Selling to Florists, CSAs, U-Pick, Farmer's Market and other sales outlets?
Answer: While our farming methods can be applied to grow flowers to be sold through any of the channels aforementioned, we will not cover other sales outlets at this time besides weddings.
- Q: Will you show us how to take your famous armful shots that you post on Instagram?
A: Yes! I'll share all my secrets and tips we use to take the perfect shot!
- Q: I've been seeing a lot of large installations, hanging chandeliers, flower "clouds"... You even have some on your website/Instagram. Will you share the mechanics behinds these types of arrangements?
- A: Yes, we love doing them and will dedicate plenty of time to talk about some case studies of pieces we've done in the past, what worked, what didn't work, what to look for, what to bring, etc. You'll also get to have hands-on experience with a large installation during the workshop, where you and the other attendees will bring one to life! Exciting!!
Q: Will there be time to network and get to know one another? I find that to be so valuable in these workshops.
A: Agreed 100%! I've made life-long friendships attending these workshops! Flower people are the best! We will get to know each other a little bit on the first day, and each class will be connected through an email group so you can coordinate outings, exchange contact info, plan shared rides, etc.
Q: Will you have a separate workshop just dedicated to Flower Farming?
A: We are currently planning one for the near future, but at this time, we're hosting a design/farming combo workshop.
Q: Will you offer recommendations on local attractions, restaurants, and what to do in Bozeman?
A: Yes, absolutely! It'll be in your Welcome Packet and we will probably email that portion to you prior to the workshop so you can make plans and arrangements with other attendees.
Q: What is the Cancellation and Refund Policy?
A: Just like a client booking a wedding or another event with you, we base our business on booked events and plan accordingly. This workshop is non-refundable. While we understand that life happens sometimes, please, please, please verify that you can 100% attend the workshop before you register. Check flights, accommodations, and all other travel aspects. We will not be able to refund you for any monies paid at any point, for any reason. This is not a casual gathering of people playing with flowers. This is a serious business course that involves staffing, vendors, rentals, product, and so many other elements that are based on a "by attendant" basis. We are charged based on the number of people that register and we are also unable to make cancellations with said vendors on our end, so this course is non-refundable.
Q: What is your COVID-19 Policy for Cancellations?
A: In the event that we need to postpone the Workshop due to COVID-19, any payment made will be applied to a future workshop date. Q: I want to bring my camera to record videos so I can rewatch them later. Is that ok?
A: Video Recording of any kind is strictly prohibited during any portion of our workshop.
Q: If we are doing hands-on design, will you critique our work and give feedback/guidance?
A: One of the reasons why I wanted to keep the groups small is to allow for a chance to connect one-on-one. While I will give you feedback on the pieces you create, I'll also allow and respect your own design style. I'll make suggestions on how you can improve your design while staying true to the style you favor. So yes!
Q: What tools should I bring?
A: If you have a knife, apron, shears/cutters/clippers that you like to use, by all means bring it! But we will provide everything you need, including clippers, containers, tape, chicken wire and more.
Q: Will you have a handout we can take home?
A: Yes! We will provide you with a Resource Guide that you can reference back after the workshop.
Q: Is this workshop geared more towards novice or experienced floral designers?
A: This workshop is geared towards designers with any level of experience, and flower farmers wanting to explore Weddings as a revenue stream for their business. While we'll also be covering the business of it all, hobbyists and flower enthusiasts are welcomed, especially those wanting to create a cut flower garden in their backyard. But, this is farming, not gardening. Farming is very different than a landscaped garden. We will teach farming and you can take it back and turn it into your own version of a garden, for sure.
Q: I see on your Instagram many armloads of gorgeous flowers like roses, orchids, etc. Will you share your secrets on how to grow those beautiful flowers?
A: While we're able to grow many beautiful flowers, roses, hydrangeas and orchids are not part of our production. We're in zone 4b where the winters are harsh and summers are mild, making it impossible for us to grow these heat-loving plants. We maximize our growing space by growing hard to find varieties that are finicky to ship and order in the roses we need for our work.
Q: I'm interested in the Farming portion of the Workshop. Will you be demonstrating how you perform farming tasks such as bed preparation, irrigation, season extension techniques, etc?
A: While I'd love to cover all those things, there's only so much we can go over during the time we have. While we will discuss all the farming techniques we use at the farm, we won't be doing any demos or hands-on sessions. The focus of the workshop will be hands-on floral design. You will get to harvest flowers though! :)
